We’re Going on a Waste Quest!

Studio 1.5 Degrees created a campus solution for gamifying the waste and behavioural change.

Through the use of fun characters to get students to relate to the story of a quest, Neil the Cockatiel, Kai the Koala and Gabby the Goanna, our aim was to change behaviours of throwing food waste in the bins and divert 1 tonne of food waste equivalent to 0.42 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Campaign Posters

Campus cafes would have a priority line to those who brought their own containers, bins would have coloured wraps on them to help distinguish which bin to throw things in which correlated to an app, geolocation AR filter and earned you points in the app.

Gardens using Swinburne’s compost would have signage to show tangible results and reinforce people’s good behaviour.

This campaign also included fun stickers for people’s food containers, a website and mobile app to track bin decisions and check the leaderboard, an educational pamphlet printed on recycled paper and biodegradable ink and social media content.

Studio 1.5 Degrees were proud to receive high commendation for our campaign – many thanks go to my fellow designers Ellen Wadley, Madelein Huynh and Caleb Hayhoe-Castle.
